Mail Queues

These graphs show the mail queues on our servers. The mail queues represent the total number of inbound mails being passed across our network to our customers. You can see mail queues over the last 24-hours, the week and the month. Each coloured line shows the queue status on an individual mail server.

Mail queues can form when inbound email is forwarded to the servers that deliver the mail via POP3 mailboxes, IMAP Webmail or SMTP servers. Normally our servers balance and process the queues so that mail delivery is not delayed by heavy load. However if a particular server begins to have problems handling the amount of email flowing through it (if targeted by spamming activity for example), the queues can build, slowing email delivery.

Our aim is to minimise mail queues as much as possible across the platform. Whenever mail queues begin to increase we address the issue by resolving the root cause, whether that be equipment malfunction or email load.

Most customer email will be delivered to our mxcore (below) servers. If the core mail servers are ever busy, our mxlast servers will handle the queue. Email will also be delivered to mxlast if the server that is sending the email specifies this as the destination. Most of the mail queued on the mxlast servers is undeliverable spam that will ultimately be rejected. This is why the mail queues on mxlast are generally higher than those on mxcore.
